The European Union’s new Methane Regulation (EU/2024/1787) is officially here—and it’s changing the rules of the game for oil and gas producers around the world.

If your product ends up in the EU market—whether directly or buried deep in the global LNG supply chain—you need to understand this regulation, and fast. That’s why I’ve developed a new course designed specifically for international oil and gas companies who are navigating the path to compliance.

Why This Course and Why Now?

The EU Methane Regulation was passed in June 2024. It establishes legally binding requirements for monitoring, reporting, and verifying methane emissions across oil, gas, and coal sectors. While the rule technically applies to importers of fossil fuels into the EU, it creates contractual pressure all the way upstream—especially after August 2024, when new contracts must prepare for regulatory compliance.

Starting in 2025, importers will begin requesting methane data. By 2027, they’ll need robust, independently verified measurement-informed inventories (MIIs) that meet EU standards. The EU has explicitly named OGMP 2.0 as a pathway for compliance—but that’s only part of the story.

This course was created to cut through the noise and provide producers with what they need to know to keep contracts secure, reduce risk, and identify commercial opportunities.

What You’ll Learn

Over the past year, we’ve engaged with dozens of international stakeholders to better understand the implications of the EU rule and help operators prepare accordingly. This course distills that experience into an accessible, action-focused 80-minute curriculum.

You’ll gain insights on:
  • What the EU Methane Regulation requires—and when
  • How upstream producers will be impacted contractually even if they aren’t directly regulated
  • What OGMP 2.0 Level 5 really means, and how it compares to EU MRV expectations
  • How importers and exporters are adapting today, and what they’ll ask from producers in 2025 and beyond
  • What the biggest unknowns and risk factors are, from data traceability to verification timelines
  • What you can do right now to reduce risk and position your company as a preferred supplier

Whether you’re just hearing about OGMP 2.0 for the first time or have already begun building MIIs, this course will help you identify your current status and your most efficient next steps.

Who It’s For

This course is for upstream oil and gas producers and implicated companies outside the EU – especially those with assets or contracts that may link into the EU supply chain. That includes:

  • LNG exporters and their upstream suppliers
  • Onshore and offshore producers with EU-linked offtake agreements
  • Companies exploring differentiated gas or methane certification
  • Teams managing ESG, regulatory affairs, or commercial contracts

No prior experience with OGMP 2.0 is required, but the course also goes deep for companies who’ve already begun the journey.

Why Highwood?

At Highwood, we’ve been at the forefront of methane MRV since before OGMP 2.0 was launched. Our consulting team has led dozens of MII implementations. Our EIP SaaS platform is purpose-built to meet OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard requirements. And we publish one of the most widely read methane newsletters in the world.

We believe that early action isn’t just about avoiding penalties—it’s about positioning your company to win. This course is part of our mission to make methane compliance easier, safer, and cheaper for operators.

Ready to Learn?

The EU methane rule is already reshaping global oil and gas markets. By 2027, measurement-informed methane data won’t just be a nice-to-have—it will be a requirement for doing business with the EU.

Don’t wait for your importer to send you a compliance clause. Get ahead now.
