This month in the Highwood Bulletin, I cover the launch of the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation, insights from Highwood’s Houston Innovation Forum, Europe’s methane import rules and US tariffs, OGCI’s new Methane Library, an OGMP 2.0 podcast with Highwood and Project Canary, the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard consultation, and the continued growth of Highwood’s EIP software and online methane courses. Thank you as always for reading and for your support of Highwood.
ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation Launched
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has officially launched the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation project in Seoul. This initiative aims to enhance methane reduction efforts across ASEAN countries by facilitating policy development, technology deployment, and capacity building. Supported by South Korea’s Ministry of Environment, the project will assist ASEAN nations in meeting their methane reduction targets under the Global Methane Pledge. Read more here.
Highwood’s Houston Innovation Forum a Success
The 2025 Highwood Innovation Forum brought together industry leaders in Houston for in-depth discussions on the future of methane management. Key topics included OGMP 2.0 implementation, reconciliation challenges, new methane regulations, and advances in emissions measurement technologies. Insights from the forum highlight the growing demand for data-driven methane strategies and the importance of industry collaboration. Read my key takeaways here.
Europe’s methane import rules and US tariffs
Tensions over trade between the US and EU may impact upcoming methane import regulations. The EU is preparing to enforce strict methane intensity standards for imported natural gas, which would impact LNG shipments from the US. However, with the Trump administration considering new tariffs on European goods, analysts speculate that methane regulations could become a bargaining chip in negotiations. The outcome may shape global methane policies and influence how energy trade aligns with climate goals. Read more here.
OGCI Launches Methane Library
Highwood has supported the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) in curating and launching a new Methane Library, a new resource designed to help the O&G industry tackle methane emissions. Developed with input from industry experts, OGCI’s methane library is the most comprehensive compilation of methane resources available. Learn more here.
Podcast: OGMP 2.0 with Highwood and Project Canary
In a recent Project Canary podcast, experts from Highwood Emissions Management and Project Canary discussed the challenges and opportunities of OGMP 2.0, the evolving landscape of measurement-informed inventories, the role of technology, and the importance of harmonizing regulatory and voluntary standards. Highwood’s EIP software was also highlighted as a tool to streamline OGMP 2.0 reporting. Listen to the full discussion here.
EPA Approves New Alternative Test Methods for Methane Detection
On February 21, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved three new alternative test methods for methane emissions detection: GHGSat (aircraft system), ChampionX (helicopter-based OGI), and LongPath (continuous monitoring system). These methods provide industry stakeholders with expanded options for compliance and emissions monitoring. Read more here.
Comment of SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has opened a public consultation for updates to its Corporate Net-Zero Standard. This revision aims to refine criteria for corporate decarbonization pathways, addressing concerns around offsets, scope 3 emissions, and interim targets. Stakeholders are invited to provide input on key changes that will shape how businesses align with international climate goals. The consultation runs until April 26, 2025. Read more here.
Don’t miss our Research Digest
Highwood’s Research Digest highlights recent methane emissions research, focusing on advancements in measurement methods, quantification, and the identification of emission sources within the oil and gas sector. The 14th edition of our Research Digest was published on February 26, 2025 and is available for free here.
Highwood launches EIP software
The O&G sector is transitioning from traditional bottom-up inventories to measurement-informed inventories (MIIs) for more credible methane emissions reporting, a shift driven by evolving regulations and voluntary initiatives. To formalize the MII process into a consistent workflow, we have worked with an industry steering committee since 2023 to build EIP, a novel methane accounting software. Lean more about EIP here and read my blog on the story here.
Highwood grows online methane courses
Five methane courses are now available online and on-demand (another coming soon). These include courses on reconciliation and measurement-informed inventories (New! By Jeff Rutherford), OGMP 2.0, methane technology, methane basics, voluntary initiatives, and more. Explore our courses here.
